Thankfully, cancer treatments continue to become more nuanced and targeted as more research is being done and healthcare advances. This makes it even more important to remember that everyone’s breast cancer journey is unique.
It can be comforting to meet people who have walked or are walking this journey because there is so much to share, but there is no one-size-fits-all with any stage of cancer. This is both good and hard.
If you or a loved one feels “lost” in a cancer journey, here are some ways to gain a sense of direction:
- Connect to your present self by meditating, journaling, or moving your body. There can be a lot of data and decisions thrown at you, so finding ways to process the information, the fear, and the grief can help lessen the overwhelm.
- Choose healthcare providers who are trustworthy. Of course, there are no perfect doctors or healthcare facilities, but if you have the ability to choose, it really can make a difference if you feel confident in the people and places directing your care. Once you’ve found a place where you feel cared for and attended to as a truly unique individual having a unique experience, it’s better to trust that they are doing their best than to riddle yourself with second thoughts.
- Don’t compare. There are so many different paths breast cancer can take, and so many different paths to recovery. Some people need surgery, while others don’t. Some need chemo, and some don’t. So, remind yourself that as your unique story is unfolding, the solutions might be just as unique, too.
- Trust in something bigger than yourself. Health problems remind us of our fragility, and also of the preciousness, and precarity, of life. There are no guarantees or certainties and cancer brings this to the forefront. Whether you are battling this in the company of many loved ones, or whether you are alone, connect to a bigger, deeper truth and hope. Your life is infinitely valuable and peace and love are still here within the uncertainty–sometimes even more so. Hoping is actually a very creative thing to do, so be creative.
You are unique and so is your journey with cancer, but remember: you are never alone.
